 1897               

 January 15

 

 Born at Cuttack (Orissa) a few minutes after 12 a.m between 12 adn 1 p.m - 11 Magh, 1303 

 1902 Entered Baptist Mission School, Cuttack
 1909 Joined Revenshaw Collegiate School, Cuttack
 1912 Passed Metriculation Examination from Calcutta University, standing second in the Order of Merit
 1913
 Joined the Presidency College, Calcutta
 1914  Left home during summer vacations in search of spiritual truth and guru. Visited Rishikesh, Haridwar, Madhura, Vrindaban et. but returned home after two months 'empty -handed'
1916 February 15 

 E F Oaten, European teacher, Presidency College, 'punished' by students for insulting behaviour towards India and Indians. Subhas rusticated from College for being their leader. The third year student Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose had the first taste of martyrdom.

 Culcatta University Syndicated permitted Bose to resume studies

 Bose Joined Scottish Church College, Calcutt. Took Honours course in Philosophy

 1918
 Passed B.A (Hons) with flying colours, securing first division with second position (in Philosophy) in the whole University. Won the Pratap Chandra Majumdar Medal and the Philip Samuel Smith and William Smith Prizes.

 1919

 Left for Europe for higher studies and ICS examination.

 Joined Cambridge University - Mental and Moral Sciences Tripos

 Took I C S Examination and succeeded, standing fourth in the merit list

 Wrote to Secretary of State for India: " I desire to have my name removed from the list of probationars in the ICS"

 Completed his course at Cambridge in the third division. Sailed for India. Met Gandhiji at Bombay - not satisfied, Went to C R Das in Culcatta and accepted him as his Political Guru.

 Organized Hartal in Calcutta on Prince of Wales arrival (Bombay) in India

 Experienced his first arrest - in jail for six months.

 The Swaraj Party formed by C R Das and Motilal Nehru. Bose also jointed it

 Became Secretary of BPCC

 Became Chief Executive Officer of the Calcutta Corporation under C R Das (Mayor) on half the month Salary - Rs 3000 /- which he spent for the poor.

Arrested again under Regulation III of 1818 for "revolutionary involvement".

  C R Das - Subhas Chandra Bose's Political Guru passed away when he was in Mandalay Jail

  Won elections to the Bengal Legislative Council from prison with great majority.

  Seriously ill - continual fever and weight loss ( 161 pounds to 138 ). Suspected T B, but was not confirmed.

 Shifted from Burma to India (Almora) but released on reaching Calcutta - probably on doctor's advise - After two and a half year in jail. The ex-prisoner wasnow the "rising Sun of India"

 Compiled a small book "Boycott of British Goods" with Dr H C Sinha

 Moved an amendment to Gandhiji's resolution of complete independence in the Lahore Congress that we should at once go for "complete boycott" of the Government. However Gandhiji did not accept it - "we are not yet prepared for a parallel Governernment".

 Dropped from Congress Working Committee

 Arrested again under 124 A IPC, etc

 Reached Vienna. Met Vitthalbhai Patel - the elder brother of Sardar Vallabhai Patel

 Bose - Patel manifest issued pledging 'radical reorganizatio', for Gandhi failed to deliver goods.

 Proposed to form a new party - the Samyavadi Sangh.

 Patel breathed his last, bequeathing his political and financial legacy to Bose.

 Toured Europe. While in Italy, he met Mussolini twice.

 Toured Most of Europe. Meeting Indians and Europeans to gather support for Indian Movement.

 Started working on "The Indian Struggle 1920 - 1934" . Took secretarial assistance from Miss Emile Schenkl, his future wife

 His father Janakinnath Bose died. Bose returned home.

 Met Mussolini and presented his book - The Indian Struggle 

 The British Govt proscribed Bose's book, though London Daily Herald called it calm, sane, dispassionate - ablest work on current Indian Politics

 Operated upon in Vienna - Gall bladder removed

 Visited Ireland - Met President De Valera (his inspiration) three times.

 Arrested as soon as he reached Bombay. 

 All India Subhas day observed on Congress President Nehru's appeal.
